Researchers at the University of Regensburg in Germany have recently announced that they have used eye tracking technology to develop a software system that allows computer users to control various commands without the use of a mouse.
One of the basic functions of this "Bright Eyes" system is the ability to capture the movement of a computer user's gaze through an eye tracker mounted under the computer display. When the user looks at an instruction on the display, the cursor will move to the corresponding position, and the user can press the space bar to execute the relevant command. If the user's gaze is not accurate enough for the cursor, the user can also calibrate by adjusting the settings in the software.
Researchers say that the "Bright Eyes" system can have many applications. For example, when users browse the Internet to learn web pages, computers equipped with this system can analyze the user's learning habits and respond accordingly.
