The breeding boar is the basis for obtaining a large number of high-quality pigs, and it is also a prerequisite for the farm to obtain good economic benefits. Therefore, the scientific feeding and management of improved boars plays an important role in exerting their genetic performance and improving the pregnancy rate and litter size of sows. In practical work, the following six key measures should be taken.

First, choose a good boar

The selection of breeder boars should be based on their value. The main varieties are mainly Duroc, Yorkshire and Landrace. The seed selection should come from a breeding farm that has no epidemic area and has a “License for the Production of Breeding Livestock and Poultry”. The breeder's genealogy and epidemic prevention files are sound. The breeding pigs are in line with the characteristics of fine varieties. General requirements for a large forehead width, forequarters developed, chest wide and deep, flat abdomen is not sagging, hip flat and plump shape, strong limbs, large testes and bilateral symmetry, no hernia. Robust and well-developed.

Second, pay attention to nutrition conditioning

The boars were isolated and reared for one month after being transferred back to normal feeding after being fully adapted to the environment. After 100 kg body weight, feed restriction was implemented. Diversify the diet as much as possible, pay attention to animal and vegetable protein feeds, feed nutrition requirements, protein levels of 18% to 20%. Diets are generally based on concentrates, preferably full-priced feeds. Conditions can be properly fed carrots or high quality green feed, but not too much, so as not to cause drooping belly, affecting breeding.

Maintaining 70% to 80% of public opinion. The boars are fed 2 to 3 times a day, and the non-mating period diets are 2kg to 2.5kg, and the breeding period is 2.5kg to 3kg. Third, control the breeding intensity

Breeding of boars, drinking water and cold water cannot be done immediately after breeding or harvesting. If the long-term non-breeding, no sperm collection or breeding, sperm extraction frequency will make the quality of semen decline, loss of libido, dead sperm increased. The service life of good breed boars is generally 2 to 3 years. Over-age use will affect the mating rate and litter size of sows.

Fourth, strengthen scientific management

In the management of breeding boars, we must develop the habit of quantitative, regular feeding, and defecation. Automatic drinking fountains are installed to ensure sufficient drinking water. Breeding boars are bred in a single circle, covering an area of ​​8 to 10 square meters. The sheds are far away from the breeding site, separated by male and female shelters to prevent unrest and masturbation caused by the boar commotion. During the non-breeding period, the boar movement can be dispelled once or twice a day, and the mileage is 1 km to 2 km. The conditional pig farms can be grazing. The winter should be better at noon, and summer should be exercised in the morning and evening.

Brush the body of pig skin every morning to remove dirt, reduce skin diseases, promote blood circulation and metabolism, and increase sperm motility. When boar tips were found to be open, boars could be used to lie down and be repaired in time, and the fangs should be thrown out to prevent the sows from being injured or killed during breeding. The optimum temperature in the house is 18°C ​​to 20°C, and over 28°C will generate heat stress, affect semen quality, and even cause boar death from heatstroke. Fifth, the use of qualified semen

The quality of the semen should be checked every 15 days or so and each time the artificial insemination is used, it should be checked immediately after the sperm is collected. Normal boar semen is milky white or pale white, showing "cloudy", 70% of the sperm linear motion trajectory. If the sperm appearance is watery, pink, or green, microscopic examination reveals that the sperm rotates slowly, has no linear motion, and has an irregular trajectory. The spermatozoon is azoospermia, spermatozoa, and spermatozoa are not suitable for breeding.

Six, do a good job of immunity and disease prevention

Good immunization and disease prevention of boars of good breeds play an important role in exerting the genetic predominance potential of boars. Strengthen management before mating, timely immunization, and regular injections every year, and at the same time in March and September of each year once a foot-and-mouth disease vaccine.

In the case of boar loss of libido or loss of performance and unwillingness to approach or cross estrus, the boar may be injected intramuscularly with 0.3 mg to 0.5 mg of testosterone propionate per kilogram of body weight. When boar skin inflammation occurs, 4 million units of penicillin, 1 million units of streptomycin, and 10 ml of amniotic fluid are intramuscularly injected twice a day for 3 days.
