Seven measures to improve rabbit hair quality and yield

(1) Promote good seed selection, fine seed selection, and practice of crossbreeding. Among the long-haired rabbits raised in China, Angora rabbits from Germany had the highest hair production, Angola rabbits from the French system were middle, and Angola from the English and Chinese systems were lower. In recent years, the amount of wool produced by the Tang line and the long hair rabbits of the Yan family grown in China has been high. While promoting good varieties, we must continue to breed these fine varieties in order to avoid degradation of future generations.

(b) Ensure nutritional supply and provide full-priced diets. Since sulfur is one of the constituent elements of rabbit hair, it has an important influence on the yield, elasticity and strength of rabbit hair. Therefore, attention should be paid to the addition of sulphur-containing amino acid cystine during dietary supplementation. The keratin of rabbit hair is composed of various amino acids, so a large amount of protein must be supplied. In the ideal hair rabbit diet, protein should account for about 17%, and sulfur-containing amino acids should not be less than 0.6%.

Reproduction of female rabbits from the pre-pairing shearing, short-separation shearing, prenatal self-drawing, etc., can make about 30% of the hair loss of textile value. Castration can increase the gross production of male rabbits, but should not be cast off prematurely. For this purpose, breeding and wool production can be specialized.

In winter, plucking is the main type. In summer, shearing is the main method. Plucking is applied to breeds with large coat density and individuals. (g) timely collection of hair. Change the seasonal climate before plucking hairs. The young rabbits began to change their hair 42 days after their birth and lasted for 70 days. Therefore, hair was collected within 50 days after birth. In adult rabbits, hair replacement is usually performed in the spring from March to April. Winter wool is usually grown in summer; in the autumn, it usually takes 8 to 9 months to remove the summer hair and replace it with winter hair. For this reason, the time of hair collection should be arranged before the hair replacement.

In addition, it is also an important measure to establish a reasonable age structure of the rabbit population, artificial hair-feeding, maintaining a suitable ambient temperature, eradicating the bursitis of hairy rabbits, and eradicating alopecia.
