Co-author, Christopher Capelinger, an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, previously developed an ionic conductor that energizes artificial muscles and uses them to make transparent speakers, but cannot heal itself after a mechanical failure. The reason for not being able to heal itself is that the covalent bonds contained in these polymers react in an electrochemical environment, reducing the properties of the material. Wang Chao uses ion dipole action to couple the charged ions and polar molecules, which greatly improves the stability of the ionic conductor. Finally, a new self-healing material with a variety of superior properties is developed.
