Second, the grafting time
When the new walnut shoots are half lignified, budding should be started. The time is generally from late May to early July.
Third, grafting method
1. Take buds. Use a budding knife to cut a knife at a position 0.5 cm above the bud and 0.5 cm from the petioles and cut it horizontally to a depth of xylem, and then cut from the upper side of the bud 0.3 cm from the left and right sides of the bud. To the horizontal cuts below each cut a knife, but also cut to the xylem, gently hold the petiole by hand to push the buds away from the scion, take off the buds, at this time must pay attention to see if buds with protection of bud meat. When shoots are taken, the shoots are generally taken from the middle of the scion, and the middle shoots are full, and the graft survival rate is high.
2. Cut the rootstock. Within 10-20 cm from the base of the rootstock in the current year, choose a smooth surface, cross-cut each blade in the upper and lower positions of the rootstock according to the vertical length of the bud, and deepen to the xylem. The distance between the upper and lower must be exactly equal to that of the bud. Then cut a knife from the upper left lateral incision to the lower transverse incision, and then gently open the stock veneer from the left as if you were opening the door.
3. Stick buds. The buds are quickly inserted from the left side of the rootstock door, and the anvil door is affixed to the side until the buds are completely attached to the rootstock's interface and the open stock skin is cut with a blade. Pay attention to the buds do not rub the buds back and forth, so as not to destroy the protection of the bud, must make the bud cut and anvil incision aligned to ensure that the top and bottom, left and right incision close contact.
4. Bundling. Press the petiole tightly with the thumb and cover the buds, petioles and rootstock with a plastic film wider than the bud, then avoid the buds and petioles from bottom to top, and place the buds and rootstocks at the interface. Tightly tied to prevent moisture evaporation and rain infiltration. Note that the buds and petioles can only be wrapped with a layer of plastic film, and pay attention to the strength of the package. It is necessary to wrap tightly and not to crush the buds.
