Acorn Processing and Feeding Pigs

Acorn is a high-energy feed containing starch up to 50-63.5%, crude protein 3.4%, and crude fat 4.4%. Its nutrient content is similar to that of general materials. It can be seen everywhere in the mountains. Collecting and processing acorns can feed pigs, saving concentrates and reducing feed costs. Acorns are harvested in late autumn and pre-winter seasons. Generally, about 35 kg of acorns (m) are obtained after 50 kg of acorns are shelled. The collected acorns are treated to eliminate pests and increase feeding value. The commonly used methods for handling acorns are:
1. Water soaking eliminates astringent method. Place the acorns in the cylinders, barrels, and cement pools, fill them with clear water until the acorns are submerged, and stir them a few times, so that debris or insect-damaged acorns can float in the water and remove them. Usually soaked for 15 days or so, during which several times of water, you can suffocate the larvae and developing eggs in the acorn, and can eliminate some tannic acid (tannin) contained in the acorns.
2. Dry (baking) dry shelling method. Remove the water-soaked acorns and drain the water. Place it on a concrete floor or a slate mat (curtain) to expose the sun or dry it on a fire. Remove the acorn shell from the kernel, shake the acorn with a hand and listen to the noise in the shell. Use a wooden stick or a stone roller to make the acorn kernels shell and remove the shell skin with a windmill or a rake. Acorns are yellow or milky yellow and are stored in bags, boxes, jars, buckets, and other containers.
3. Crush acorn storage method. Generally, when the acorn kernels are dry and the water content is below 12%, they are powdered with a stone mill or a pulverizer and stored in a woven (cloth) bag or a plastic bag. The mouth is tightly closed and stored in a ventilated place with high dryness. Acorn powder is used as a feed material for pigs for many years. To feed pigs with acorns, it is best not to feed raw acorns or whole acorns. According to laboratory tests, acorns contain 12.8% tannic acid, sour and bitter taste, harmful to the digestive function of pigs, reduce appetite, and prone to serious constipation. Therefore, the following points should be noted when using acorns to feed pigs:
1. The day before feeding, soak the acorn (powder) in the cylinder, pot, and bucket. Stir or rinse several times. Try to lose tannic acid as much as possible to remove the bitterness and astringency, so that the pig will love to eat, increase the weight, Improve absorption and utilization without hurting the stomach.
2. Feed properly and mix it with other feeds. Acorns contain less protein, pay attention to the protein feed. The general feeding amount is: within 50 kg, the pigs account for about 25% of the diet, 50 kg or more account for about 35% of the diet, the weaned pigs account for about 10% of the diet, and the pregnant sows do not feed or feed the acorns as much as possible. To prevent abortion. When the acorns are fed without comminution, they can be fed directly in the feeding trough after soaking with tannic acid and softening. However, if you want to control the appropriate amount, don't look for the pigs to eat, eat more and feed more. Feed fresh acorns that are not soaked in water.
