Recently, Academician Zhong Nanshan accepted an exclusive interview with this reporter, and the rumors once again inspired us.
Reporter: The large-scale explosion of SARS in 2003 has been in the past few years. So far, has the SARS pathogen been clearly identified?
Zhong Nanshan (hereinafter referred to as "clock"): The source of the disease has been clearly identified, that is, the SARS coronavirus. The virus is transmitted to humans through wild animals, and the representative is the civet. Studies have shown that the SARS-like coronavirus isolated from the civet is highly homologous to the SARS virus isolated from humans. It is the main carrier of the SARS virus.
Why did SARS first occur in Guangdong? Because Cantonese people like to eat game. The SARS virus is derived from wild animals, but what is passed on to the civet is still unclear. It is only known that the civet is transmitted to humans, and the civet is easily infected. When people are in close contact with poisonous civet cats, such as slaughter, processing, transportation, breeding, sales, and trafficking, there is a great chance of contracting the SARS virus.
In 2004, the Guangdong Provincial Government strengthened the management of high-risk wildlife and markets, prohibiting the sale, sale, slaughter and consumption of civet. If you do not cut off the wild animals at that time, the consequences will be very serious. Of course, now we have formed legislation to cut off the route of infection.
Reporter: In recent years, SARS, bird flu and hand, foot and mouth disease have been staged in China. What is the cause?
Zhong: The big reason lies in the excessive exploitation and over-utilization of human beings in the natural environment. Because human beings have an ecological balance with nature and animals. After breaking this balance, human beings will be retaliated. Like SARS, if humans don't slaughter and eat wild animals, "well water does not make river water," there is no such disease.
From the perspective of human beings, the living and living environment of human beings has changed a lot compared with the predecessors. With the development of urbanization, developed transportation, and deepening exchanges between countries, a virus may be carried to Canada from China. This can also be seen as the duality of modern civilization.
Reporter: In the face of unpredictable epidemics (such as SARS, bird flu), how do you evaluate the emergency response mechanism of disease prevention and control in China? What aspects do you think should be improved and improved?
Zhong: From now on, for the major epidemic, there are already instant messaging systems in the country, and guidelines for prevention and control have also been established. This has been a great improvement. From the response of SARS and other public health events, we have learned lessons and improved the emergency system, which shows that human beings have great initiative.

Zhong: After SARS has been ravaged, it has aroused public health and health awareness. But after the incident, it is easy for people to forget the lesson. Like avian flu, Chinese people like to eat live chickens, but these chickens are not tested and they are hidden from the danger of viral infection.
For the public, the improvement of knowledge is very important. Like hand, foot and mouth disease is mainly caused by personal hygiene reasons.
After SARS, our life concept in the whole society has changed very well. In the past, it was eating and karaoke. Now people are pursuing more spiritual consumption. Health, fitness, and sports have become popular. After the Beijing Olympics, the slogan of “Green Olympics†has been put forward. These are all gratifying changes.
Reporter: How big is the physiological and psychological sequelae that SARS brings to people?
Zhong: SARS should not have much psychological sequelae to ordinary people, but it should be very big for those patients who have been sick and those who have been isolated. I remember that more than a year after SARS, some people used masks to look for me. Now, the patient's sequelae should be said to be getting better. Because people know that this disease can be cured, can be cured, and positive emotions are greater than negative emotions.
After SARS, people began to change their lifestyles and knew that they should not eat game. It should be said that people's understanding of health has changed a lot after SARS.
Reporter: At the beginning of the SARS outbreak, the relevant departments did not announce the facts in time. Now, looking back, what are the consequences?
Zhong: Chinese people don't like home ugliness. Like some infectious diseases, they don't like to talk, they like to hide, but this is really a stupid way.
The timely publication of information by the government can show the integrity of the government and improve the image of the government. As far as I understand, the so-called stability is to have a good transparency, let the people know more and understand more information. Generally speaking, the more transparent the government is to the development of the epidemic, the more stable the public is, and honesty is always the best policy.
SARS is also an opportunity for our entire country and society at another level. The scientific outlook on development was put forward after that. After 2003, a harmonious society was put forward in a clear-cut manner. I have always agreed to use HDI (author's note: HumanDevelopmentIndex, meaning: Human Development Index) to examine social development. HDI includes the three aspects of people's health, education and per capita GDP. It is impossible to look at the development of GDP. .
Reporter: At what level or stage have you studied SARS at home and abroad? Is there any new major discovery of Zui?
Zhong: Now we are still conducting research on SARS. Pulmonary fibrosis caused by acute lung injury is a good research topic. In terms of how the virus affects tissue fibrosis and SARS to study avian flu, the two mechanisms are actually the same. SARS is still studying abroad. We are also doing some work now.
Reporter: What do you think about the pressure you encountered during SARS?
Zhong: There were some misinformations at the time, such as my cooperation with Hong Kong, but I don't think it is wrong, even now I feel right. However, my stress was mainly from the patient, because the situation was urgent and so many patients died. The pressure of my Zui is still due to the rescue of several patients. I am just a doctor. I just want to find ways to treat patients well and do not care about the status.
