Spanish researchers use 3D printed protective sheets to improve skin cancer radiotherapy

A group of researchers from Spain used 3D printing technology to develop a new way to treat skin cancer. The research team is based at Rovira i Virgili University, IISPV Institute and Sant Joan de Reus Hospital, which scans the patient's face and uses 3D printed custom parts to protect healthy skin from radiation therapy.

One of the major radiotherapy techniques is called short-wave therapy, which involves direct contact of radioactive materials with tumors. This method can damage healthy skin around the tumor unless there are physical protection measures. Handmade methods are currently used, using molds and special alginate materials. This algae plastic material must remain on the patient's face for up to 24 hours and is therefore not suitable for patients who are already dealing with trauma and symptoms that may be life threatening.

3D printing technology makes making the protective parts easier and more comfortable. After the CT scan, the doctor creates a virtual 3D model of the patient's face through digital conversion and then prints it out in 3D from the model. This technology takes only 7 hours, so the treatment of the patient is better than the mold, which makes the radiation treatment more accurate and effective.

Clinical trials of this procedure have been conducted for patients with nasal cancer because this is the most irregular and the biggest challenge for making face protectors. Successful trials mean that the technology can be easily applied to any other area of ​​the body.

Radiation physicists at Sant Joan de Reus Hospital are still experimenting with 3D printing with the best materials. So far, the protective sheet has been printed using PLA consumables 3D, and the materials in other tests are also very fast. No matter which material is used last, the cost is much cheaper than traditional craftsmanship.
