Scientists at the University of Bristol and the National Health System's Blood and Transplant Management Office say they have made breakthroughs in the production of red blood cells, and vector production of artificial blood has taken a big step.

The BBC quoted researchers as saying on the 24th that the previous method of manufacturing artificial blood was to "cheat" bone marrow stem cells to make red blood cells in the laboratory, but each stem cell will not be able to cause apoptosis after making less than 50,000 red blood cells. This time, the new method used by researchers is to make stem cells "live forever" and remain in an early state that can proliferate and divide. When a certain amount is reached, the researchers induce them to become red blood cells.

Yan Flaine, who participated in the study, said: "We have proven that we can continue to produce red blood cells for clinical use. We have produced several liters." The results are published in the British journal Nature.

However, the researchers admit that their current ability to produce artificial blood is equivalent to the level of family workshops, and there is still a long way to go from mass production to the factory, “facing the challenges of bioengineering”. In addition, production costs are also a major obstacle.
