Robert Wall and colleagues point out that cows that express the antibacterial protein lysostaphin in the mammary gland are better able to beat the infection. The trial confirmed that cows carrying the lysostaphin gene were more resistant to mastitis when challenged with Staphylococcus aureus. Although lysostaphin does not kill all bacteria that cause mastitis, these results show the possibility that different antibacterial genes can be used to control other harmful bacteria in the cow.
