The Moroccan Wheat Tender did not attract suppliers

According to traders on August 31, the 140,000-ton US Durummai tender held in Morocco did not attract any bidders because of high international prices and high import tariffs in Morocco.

Traders stated that Morocco must re-launch the tender meeting based on adjusted import duties.

At present, Morocco's durum import tariff is 80%. The government decided last week to cancel soft wheat import tariffs from September 16, but did not say that it would adjust Durain's import tariffs.

According to traders, the tender meeting was held in accordance with preferential tariff policies.

Traders said that according to the tariff rates, coupled with high international prices, it means the cost is still very high.

Another trader stated that the price of Durum wheat in the United States has been deterred by domestic traders. Current tariffs are another obstacle.

The tight international supply has caused Durum prices to double in the past two months.

From a technical point of view, the Moroccan National Food Administration does not directly source wheat from the tender meeting, but will issue licenses to private traders to import wheat. Most of the wheat comes from the European Union and the United States.

Morocco is usually a major wheat importer and imports about 100 to 4 million tons of wheat each year, depending on the size of domestic production.
