For the study of itch, the molecular and cellular mechanisms of itch in the skin, sensory neurons and spinal cord have been studied before, and there are very few studies on how the brain processes itch and how to dynamically regulate itch.
Sun Yangang's research group used mice as the research object, and found that there is a special type of excitatory neurons in the gray matter around the midbrain aqueduct, killing or inhibiting this group of neurons, can significantly reduce the itch-induced scratching behavior. Conversely, activation of this group of neurons can induce strong scratching behavior in the absence of peripheral itch irritation.
Industry experts believe that the study reveals the cells and loop mechanisms that regulate itch information processing in the midbrain region, and a group of specific neurons in the brain region are critical for the production of the “itch-scratch†vicious circle during itching. This is expected to change the current thinking of solving the chronic itching problem. This study suggests that our future intervention in neurons responsible for itch information processing in the brain may be a new method for treating chronic itchy disease.
