Alcoa develops soybean oil-based metalworking fluid

Alcoa, the world’s leading aluminium product manufacturer, has recently developed a biodegradable metalworking fluid that uses soybean oil as its main raw material.
The Pittsburgh-based company has been cooperating with a team led by Sevim Erhan, a research chemist in agricultural utilization at the National Agricultural Research Service Center in Peoria, Illinois, for five years. In 2001, Alcoa's technical advisor Ronald Reich began to cooperate with the Agricultural Research Service Task Force on the feasibility of replacing non-recoverable petroleum development metalworking fluids with biological resources. This processing fluid is very important for Alcoa's hot and cold smooth roll operation for producing aluminum flakes for beer cans and wing panels.
Alcoa seeks biological components that are easily degradable from the oil and agricultural crops in the country, and the production method must be economical and pollution-free. Of course, this bio-based processing fluid must also meet all industrial safety and performance standards. The agricultural research service group first determined the chemical structures corresponding to the functional properties of the mineral oil-based metalworking fluids. Then they prepared equivalent biobased products based on the results of the memory measurements. They also used modified soybean oil and antioxidants. Improve the oxidation stability of the product.
Erhan chose soybean oil because soybean oil is abundant in the United States and has good chemical compatibility. After examining several soy materials, Alcoa chose to conduct a first round of tests at its Reno cast aluminum plant in Nevada. Reich said that the operators who examined the material were very satisfied and soon replaced it with the synthetic fluid originally used.
This soy material also demonstrated excellent performance in large tests such as reversible rolling mills at the Lancaster plant in Alcoa, Pennsylvania last December.
