French National Center for Health and Medical Research: Brain aging and diet structure After a long-term follow-up survey of more than 1,000 elderly people, French scientists found that brain aging in the elderly is related to the lack of selenium and certain carotenoids in plasma. The French National Center for Health and Medical Research recently published a press release saying that since 1991, France has started a study entitled "Arterial Aging Epidemiology", involving 1389 elderly volunteers aged 60 to 70. In the analysis of these data, the researchers found that the deterioration of cognitive ability in the elderly is closely related to the reduction of selenium in their blood. Later, they found that this change is also closely related to the content of carotenoids such as lycopene and zeaxanthin in the body. They reasoned that the reduction of these antioxidants in the plasma of the elderly promoted the decline of brain nerve cells, leading to a decline in cognitive ability in the elderly. Selenium is a trace element that the body can consume by eating seafood and meat. Both lycopene and zeaxanthin are carotenoids. Grapefruit, watermelon and tomatoes contain a lot of lycopene, while green vegetables and fruits contain more zeaxanthin. Therefore, adjusting the diet structure and increasing the amount of antioxidants in the body can help delay the process of brain aging. The researchers said that the results have yet to be confirmed by larger studies.
