The world’s first rice-related genes for efficient use of phosphorus were successfully cloned in Zhejiang University

The first transcription factor OsPTF1 in the world that has a clear function of increasing phosphorus efficiency in plants was recently cloned successfully at Zhejiang University. Experts pointed out that this is of great significance for improving crop phosphorus efficiency, reducing production costs and reducing environmental pollution caused by excessive application of phosphate fertilizer. The reporter learned from the Zhejiang University School of Life Sciences that, as one of the major projects of the Ministry of Education's scientific and technological research, the topic of “Cloning and Expression of Genes Related to the High-efficient Use of Rice Phosphorus” was formally accepted by the expert group. The acceptance team consisting of 7 experts from Nanjing Agricultural University, Fudan University, China National Rice Research Institute, Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences and other units believes that “This project has fully achieved its target and has made breakthroughs in plant nutrient genome research. Professor Wu Ping of the School of Life Science at the College of Life Sciences of the University of Shanghai told reporters that the research group has studied the regulation of phosphorus stress-induced transcription factor expression, high-affinity phosphorus transporters, and the regulation of hormone metabolism that controls root development. To explore the adaptation mechanisms of rice under low-phosphorus stress conditions and to adapt to the low-phosphorus environment, and to explore the allelic differences between different subtypes of rice and different genotypes in the main gene locus. Through the implementation of this project, OsPTF1 was successfully cloned.
